So, are you paying attention to what is happening in our country? With our Leaders? With our tax money? Are you mad? Frustrated? Are you hopeful? Are you glad? Do you think finally somebody’s doing something??

All of this is fine. BUT, let’s not get to distracted. Let’s not lose sight of the main thing. Proverbs says

many are the plans in a man’s heart but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails

The government will never provide ultimately what people need. It will never give people ultimate hope or a life beyond this earth. The government is supposed to be a servant of the people, but it can never teach us or lead us to truly serve another person. I believe in government, because people must be governed. But it’s only because of the Fall and sin that it has to be this way. In a perfect world God is our national leader and we follow Him and honor Him with our service, money and loyalty. More time, energy and passion given to loving and serving Him will bring true change.

Just what I think.

Luke 20:21-25:

They questioned him:

Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

He saw through their duplicity and said to them

“Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. He said to them, “Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Wednesdays beginning April 1: 6:30-8 pm

Journey Bible Class is a place where people can grow deeper in their knowledge of the Bible while connecting with others. The goals of this class are to help people take on a Christian worldview by viewing the world through the lens of Scripture and the Christian story, equip people to study God’s word on their own and develop friendships that go beyond the class.

Join us for a four-week session as we dive deeper into God’s word and practice together the basics of how to study the Bible. Going along with the Sunday messages for these weeks, our focus will be on those scenes surrounding Easter where “love wins”: the garden; the crucifixion; the resurrection; and the great commission.

Please fill out the registration form so we will know how to prepare for Journey Bible Class. Childcare will be available up to 5th grade. There will be limited spots for childcare, so register early as it will be on a first-come first-serve basis according to the date we receive your online registration form. Thanks.

We’ve been studying a lot recently about the spiritual disciplines at Cornerstone and how we make those a part of our life without them becoming burdensome. One area that we’ve put a lot of energy in to is making Scripture a key part of our life. At the beginning of February, Rusty took three weeks just to look at the Bible and the story that is played out from the beginning to the end and showing how God’s grace and redemption are always the point. And, Josh (and close to 200 other people) went on a “how-to” journey in studying the Bible.

A book I’m currently reading had a quote that I thought may help us as we continue to shape how Scripture will be an integral part of our every day life and not just of our “spiritual” journey. The author writes, “For the missional church, the Bible serves as a narrative to help the people of God understand His mission in the world and their role in it. It serves as an authoritative guide for living as God’s people while being on mission with Him to woo the world. It conveys God’s hopes for humanity, His dreams of how people should treat one another, and what life in the Kingdom looks like…The Bible presents a call to action, not just a lesson to be studied.”**

I’m in 100% aggreement with Rusty, the Bible is the story of God’s grace and redemption from beginning to end. And if this quote is also accurate, then studying the Bible isn’t just like reading a lesson for another class, it’s our call by God to join Him in His work of loving the world.

Next time you sit down and engage the Scripture, let this quote be in the back of your mind. Think about how whatever passage you are reading is scripting your role in God’s plan of redemption and what He’s calling you in for that day.

Lent is a time of prayer and preparation for the celebration of the Easter season. John Wesley communicated three simple rules: Do no harm; Do good; Stay in love with God. He expounded upon the words of Christ: Mark 12:28-31 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” Jesus answered, “is this:

Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Please join Robin Duke and Janet Deutsch in a six-week women’s study as we discover what Lent means in our lives as believers.

Lent Bible Study for Women will start on February 26 and go until April 9th and last from 10:00am – 12:00pm at KidzTown. Childcare is by reservation only, and all ladies will need to register via email by contacting Lynn Blount at lynn@cornerstonebuzz.org. Hope to see you there.
