Ash Wednesday Breaking Routines with a Lenten Reader Posted by Scott Fillmer on 22 Feb 2012, 3:47 pm
It’s already that time of year, Lent is here. Today is Ash Wednesday (see also history), marking the beginning of the season of Lent, which then takes us to the Passion and into Easter. There are many things our church does that I really like and producing a Lenten Reader for the past few years is one of them. It is such a great tool, especially how we use it in our particular church, where it ties each day of the week to the message being taught on Sunday. If your church doesn’t put out a Lenten Reader there are plenty of other options, YouVersion has two great Lenten Reader plans, Lent For Everyone and 40 Days of Lent. A Lenten reader is more than just a daily devotional, it is intended to be a meditation, a call, to pull us out of o. […]Source: "staff blogs" via Scott in Google Reader | Scott Fillmer

A Review and Critique of The Four Views on Hell Posted by Scott Fillmer on 20 Feb 2012, 7:56 pm
I just finished off another book. Every time I’m able to finish a book I think it’s a really amazing thing to me, still. Below is part of a review I did on this particular book called The Four Views on Hell (Amazon). Even though I had to read the book for a seminary class it was still worth the read, though perhaps not quite as closely as I had to read it. The Doctrine of Hell is something rarely taught anymore in our churches, and it’s an important part of the Christian faith, and our story as fallen beings. There is much more of the prosperity gospel preached today than the reality of a real place of separation from God, an eternal punishment, for those who do not trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior. For those who confess with th. […]Source: "staff blogs" via Scott in Google Reader | Scott Fillmer
A Self Diagnositc of Pride Posted by Josh Agerton on 19 Feb 2012, 12:10 pm
One of the most dangerous things about pride is that it is blinding. We can easily identify it in others – but we rarely come to see it and own it in our own lives. Months ago I came across a blog post – The 50 Fruits of Pride. Wanted to share this here as a way to help us see what we might be blind to. Be prepared to get kicked in the teeth a bit on this. But know - we cannot be free from what we do not know grips us.Source: "staff blogs" via Scott in Google Reader | Josh Agerton

“We have entered the pathway of faith. Let us hold steadfastly to it. It leads to the King’s chambers, in which are hid all treasures of knowledge and wisdom…We must walk, we must advance, we must grow, that our hearts may be capable of those things which we cannot yet grasp.” - Augustine of HippoSource: "staff blogs" via Scott in Google Reader | (author unknown)

The Priority of the Church isn’t the Alter Call Posted by Scott Fillmer on 15 Feb 2012, 9:33 pm
Over the last several years I have been asked to answer, from many different perspectives, “What is the purpose/priority of the church” and “What makes a true disciple?” (this post is the first question). Most of the time the answer to this question comes from what our culture says, and not from what Scripture says, but it’s not all that hard to answer the question properly from Scripture. To answer that, this post is filled with two-by-two’s. There are two questions posed to answer the question about the church, two photos representative of the answer. The text standing for a formal seminary conclusion, and the photos representing a tangible aspect of that answer. I love the photo above, at least to me, this is the result of t. Cold Weather, Warm Smiles Posted by Julia Farrow on 13 Feb 2012, 4:01 pm
I grew up near St. Paul, Minnesota. After 18 years of cold and snow, I headed south where I have been ever since. Now I know that the south is not immune to cold temperatures, however, we have been spoiled this winter with unusually warm weather. This weekend, winter reared it’s ugly head with unusually cold temps. As we prepared for the Worship Service at our new site, Lee-Scott Academy, temperatures were still in the 30′s. But that didn’t seem to bother our most wonderful volunteers! Armed with warm smiles and gloved hands, they were prepared to greet our guests as if it were in the 60′s. I might also mention that at the same time, volunteers at our Hamilton Road site were also braving the elements to welcome our guests there an. The Management and Passage of Time Measured in Breaths Posted by Scott Fillmer on 9 Feb 2012, 9:10 pm
I was tasked months ago at work with completing a plan of how I spend my time, and visioning for the future. It has taken me a while to do this, and I’m still not totally done, but I finished a section of it this week. Typically I have never really been the best at time management, and that’s mainly because I’m a rabbit chaser (which has it’s own great benefits as well), but the busier I get the more important it has become. Everyone’s week is carved out into three 56 hours segments that roughly translate into Work, Home-Life, and Sleep, which then makes up one 168 hour week. I like to think of time not in minutes, or hours, but in breaths, given to us by God, and if given to us by God, I’m continually asking myself, what am I. The Start of a New Multisite Church in Auburn Launches Posted by Scott Fillmer on 7 Feb 2012, 4:07 pm
This past Sunday was an incredible day in the life of Cornerstone Church here in Auburn. This was the first Sunday we started worship in two different locations; one church, in two locations. After 9 months of planning, months of praying for all aspects involved in having two sites, we finally had our first regular worship service over at Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn. To me, it went about as well as anyone could have hoped and prayed for, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Over the next few weeks, everyone involved will refine the setup and tear down process before we officially open to the public on February 26th. It was such a great day. Everyone involved, in both locations, had a part in making this past Sunday great, but God m. […]Source: "staff blogs" via Scott in Google Reader | Scott Fillmer

Since I haven't had much time to blog lately, I thought I would at least post some pictures. These are pictures from our recent trip to Kentucky to see Sister-Woman, D. Piddy & SJP. I cannot believe that she is almost 7 months old! It is going by so fast. I wish Kentucky was closer! The 8-9 hour drive is tough...definitely worth it though. The Necessity of Prayer by E.M. Bounds Book Review Posted by Scott Fillmer on 1 Feb 2012, 11:02 pm
Below is a short review of a book I just finished called The Necessity of Prayer by E.M. Bounds. It can be read for free here, or on Amazon over here, or even on audiobook over here. If you want the real real short version then pick up this book and read it, it is fantastic, and only takes about 3-4 hours to read. E.M. Bounds was a man of prayer. Prayer to Bounds was said to be such “a physical reality” that the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “pray without ceasing,” was taken as literally as humanly possible. Prayer was said to be as important to Bounds as breathing, and he lived his life accordingly.[1] Bounds had much to pray for as a “Civil War Chaplin and then POW” in Saint Louis, MO before the Civil War ended.[2] As a resu. Salt + Light = Clean Water Posted by Josh Agerton on 1 Feb 2012, 9:03 pm
Wanted to share this amazing story about Emile Ewing who has been working on this Salt and Light project for sometime now in her post graduate work at Auburn University. It’s a simple system of using salt and solar power to purify water. This past fall Emile made her 2nd trip with Cornerstone Church over to Uganda and was able to share her prototype with locals near our partner church, Buloba Community Church. It was a tremendous success and her work is making a great contribution to dealing with the overall unclean water issue that so many face around the world. The story got picked up by Auburn University and you can read more about it here. Aside from all of this, Emile’s also working on another salt and light project – leadi.
