The Beatitudes

Probably the greatest sermon ever delivered was “the sermon on the mount”. Ever heard of it? Even if you’ve not been to church much or read your Bible it’s likely you’ve heard of this before. Jesus delivered it to a group of people while standing on a mountainside in an area called Galilee.

More than just a process of “how to do Christianity”, this sermon was a complete shift in religious thought. Jesus was calling the “religious” to task, while at the same declaring to the “non-religious”, the outcast, the pitiful, the “not-good-enough”, and the losers, that God was for them. He was re-creating rules and customs so that everyone could participate in loving and serving God.

A very important part of this revolutionary teaching is the introduction. We know it as “the Beatitudes”. In Matthew’s gospel it appears in verses 3-12 of chapter 5. It was a radical proclamation that revealed the very heart of God. In this message series we will walk step by step through each one of the beatitudes and uncover what it means to be blessed by God.

Our hope is that at the end of these Sunday mornings together we will have a very different view of what our lives in Christ should look like.
