Responding to the Haiti Relief Effort

Major Earthquake Hits Port-au-Prince

As most of the world knows by this time, a major earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Millions of people are affected, and thousands are feared dead. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has close ties with the Methodist Church in Haiti and is responding to the devastating earthquake with funding, material resources and prayers.

Cornerstone Church has always been a church of action, and we felt it was only appropriate to respond to this disaster after seeking God’s guidance.

Our Collective Response at Cornerstone

On Wednesday, the leadership of Cornerstone Church came together and prayerfully considered how God would lead the people of Cornerstone to respond to this massive relief effort which is only now starting to pick up speed.

Our first response is to pray. James 5:16 tells us “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” We do not want to dismiss or discount the power of prayer for the people of Haiti.  Please pray for those in Haiti, for Haitians all around the world and for those workers on the front line. Prayer is not only important right now, but prayer will be vital for the people of Haiti in the months to come.

Our second response is to give. We want to collectively, as a church, assist with the disaster relief by giving of our finances to those who already are on the ground in Haiti. So, this Sunday, January 17, we will take up a special offering to assist in that relief effort. If you are going to write a check, you can make it out to Cornerstone United Methodist Church and put UMCOR in the memo line. If you would like to make a cash donation, look for the UMCOR baskets that will be in the Worship Area.

All donations will go directly to help those who have been affected by the earthquake.  For more information on UMCOR’s relief efforts, visit HAITI RELIEF.
